Heribert Barrera, aged 19, during the Spanish Civil war, went to the front of Aragon as a volunteer to serve in the Army of Catalonia. After the defeat of the Republican army, he was forced to go into exile in France, where he further studied and worked as a scientist. He received degrees in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, and obtained a PhD in Physics. He went back to his homeland in 1952.
V období španělské občanské války šel devatenáctiletý Heribert Barrera jako dobrovolník bojovat do řad katalánské armády. Po porážce republikánů byl přinucen k odchodu do exilu do Francie, kde později pracoval jako vědec. Studoval chemii, fyziku a matematiku a studium fyziky završil titulem PhD. Zpět do své vlasti se vrátil v roce 1952.

Heribert Barrera was also a proponent of the protection of the cultural and linguistic richness of Europe. Being unable to speak his own mother tongue in the European plenary meetings, he stood out because of his consistent use of the English language.
